Exocad for Full Dentures and Partial Dentures

The introduction to digital technology for dentures has been slow due to several factors. Lack of good software to design the dentures, lack of suitable materials and the costs of the complete system.

Now there is good and easy to use design software available and there are basically 2 options for manufacturing Full Dentures, milling and 3D printing. If you want to use the best materials available milling is the better option. 3D printing is the easiest and fastest manufacturing method to use but the material options are more limited and access to TGA approved materials also limited. 3D printing is an excellent option for making try-ins before the final version is made.

Digital Dentures

Exocad Full Denture module is a complete design solution for all the manufacturing options. It provides for a guided workflow for designing highly aesthetic full dentures. The manufacturing method has to be taken into account in the design stage, i.e. how to make the denture base, the teeth, milling the teeth as a full arch or individual teeth, 3D printing the teeth or use dental stock teeth. The denture base will be different for all the teeth options.

Dental CAD Solutions offers a fully supported solution for all the above options.

Below diagram shows the different manufacturing options for making the Denture Base and the Teeth.

The first stage in the process is capturing the impression data. It can be done by scanning the patient’s impressions with a lab scanner or direct scanning of the patient using an intra oral scanner. We supply the Medit range of scanners that are known for their reliability and accuracy.

Manufacturing using milling.

We offer the full range of Arum milling machines. For low volume production the Arum 5X-300 Pro will do the job but for high-volume production we recommend the Arum 5X-450 which has a more powerful spindle. To mill denture bases special milling templates are required in the milling software which is supplied with the Arum milling machines. The templates sets the milling parameters and strategies so a prefect milling result can be achieved in the minimum amount of milling time.

Partial Dentures with exocad PartialCAD

The partial framework module PartialCAD provides you with a digital solution for designing high-quality removable partial denture frameworks.

Apply advanced design and customization features for meshes, major connectors, clasps, lingual aprons and finish lines. Enjoy the highest design flexibility offered by PartialCAD’s extensive features and functionality for l-bar retainers, post design with retention and auto-relief for optimal fit. With this module, you can combine partial frameworks with crown and bridge design elements and create support bars for printing. In addition, partial framework customizations with logos and text are possible.

The partial framework can be manufactured in acrylic or cobalt-chrome. For a more durable framework the metal version usually preferred but it is more expensive. Traditionally the metal framework is usually cast from a wax model. The wax model can be replaced by a 3D printed resin model that is then cast. Special casting resins are available for 3D printing. The frameworks can also be 3D printed directly in cobalt-chrome using metal powder that is sintered in the 3D printer.
